Last week I published a blog post on how you can already get a sneak peek of the new Facebook Timeline Beta. You can view the blog post here: “How to enable the new Facebook Timeline“. This new change has been critisised and applauded by many people. Quite a few people like this new change by the social networking giant, but the fact remains that we still need to learn a lot of this feature.

To help you understand the Facebook Timeline and how you can use it to its full potential, here are a couple of advantages and disadvantages so that you can avoid the nasty gremlins and enjoy all the benefits of this exciting upcoming change by Facebook.

Facebook Timeline tips

View all your content: Facebook’s unique algorithm allows you to choose which stories you want to showcase on your Timeline. This allows you to hide or show certain activity that you want to publicize. Posts and updates that are marked on your Facebook Timeline that weren’t publicised are shown to you with a blue dot on the central Timeline. You can view these updates by clicking on any of the dots.

Customize favourites: Under the cover photo of your Timeline, the photo and friends boxes are fixed but you can swap around the other boxes. You can edit them to display what you want to to display. All of these boxes can either be removed or moved by clicking on the pencil edit icon when you move your mouse over them.

Hide the sidebar: Hide the sidebar if you want to make your Timeline less cluttered. In order to do this, click the arrow icon at the bottom of your screen.  This will collapse and remove your sidebar.

Advertisements: If you don’t want to see certain advertisement anymore, you can hide them. Hover over the advertisement you want to remove and click the “X” that appears on the right to remove it.

Change your primary photo: All of the albums that you have created on your Timely can be changed. By clicking on the setting icon, you can choose to change your primary photo and other ones.
